Mindfulness and Compassion
10% Happier podcast
One of the most useful resources on mindfulness is the 10% Happier audio podcast, which is hosted by journalist Dan Harris (and which is free). After having a panic attack on national TV, Harris began a mindfulness practice as a way of stress reduction. 10% Happier, which now has over 400 episodes, explores all sorts of aspects of modern mindfulness practice.
Here are three episodes that you may find interesting (use the little green “skip” to avoid the ads!):
Jon Kabat-Zinn
Modern mindfulness is derived from the traditional meditation practices of Buddhist monastics. In the 1970s, Jon Kabat-Zinn, a scientist with a PhD from MIT, saw that these practices could be used to reduce stress. As a Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, he created the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, which is now taught in over 700 medical centers nationwide. Kabat-Zinn has written two bestselling books: Full Catastrophe Living and Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life.
Kristin Neff
From self-compassion.org: “Kristin Neff, Ph.D. is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on self-compassion, being the first one to operationally define and measure the construct almost twenty years ago. In addition to her pioneering research into self-compassion, she has developed an eight-week program to teach self-compassion skills in daily life, co-created with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer, called Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC).” Neff is the author of a number of books, including most recently Fierce Self-Compassion.
Thupten Jinpa
From compassioninstitute.com: “Jinpa has been the principal English translator to H.H. the Dalai Lama since 1985, and has translated and collaborated on numerous books by the Dalai Lama including the New York Times Bestsellers Ethics for the New Millennium and The Art of Happiness, as well as Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World. His own publications include A Fearless Heart: How the Courage to be Compassionate Can Transform Our Lives.”
