WEEK #9 ASSIGNMENT
Readings:
This week there is no separate set of readings.
Instead, all of the readings are on the Prezis for Lecture #17 and #18 – and thus accordingly are featured in the YouTube videos for these two lectures. If you look at these Prezis (or watch the lectures), you will see that the individual slides often contain long quotes from experts on Buddhism. In the beginning of Lecture #17, I explain why I took this approach for these lectures.
As it may be difficult to read these long quotes during the video lectures, it will likely be easier to read them directly on the PDFs of the lecture notes for Lecture #17 and Lecture #18.
Since there is no separate set of readings for this week, think of these PDFs as the weekly reading assignment. Note that you will be tested on this material just like any of the readings.
Lecture videos:
Please watch both Lecture #17 and Lecture #18 below.
If you will be out of Internet access, you can download these videos on Vimeo: Lecture #17, Lecture #18.
If YouTube is blocked in your country, the two lectures have also been uploaded to GauchoSpace (GauchoCast).
The Prezi for the lectures is also below for your reference.
PDFs are also available for the lecture notes (i.e. the Prezi material) for Lecture #17 and Lecture #18, as are PDFs of the transcripts for Lecture #17 and Lecture #18.
(If you are confused about the role of the Prezi or PDFs in the course, or how to use them, please watch the “Introduction, Format” lecture located on the Introduction page.)
Film:
A number of the films that we have watched this term have focused on personal action, such as adopting a largely plant-based diet or becoming a minimalist, as a way of addressing the climate crisis. This week we will approach this as a political issue by considering the most sweeping legislation ever proposed in the U.S. to address the climate crisis: the Green New Deal.
Although Joe Biden’s climate proposals differ from the Green New Deal, it is still important to consider just what sort of actions would be required to mitigate the climate crisis – as well as to consider the political resistance that this proposal received.
Please watch “The Green New Deal, explained,” and “Why you still don’t understand the Green New Deal,” which are both short VOX videos, as well as “A Message From the Future With Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.” All are on YouTube.
Film assignment: after watching the above three films, please watch Ken’s video on YouTube introducing them and comment on his video.
Weekly Assignment/Assessment:
Please note that both the reading and lecture, as well as film, assignments need to be completed by 6 AM on Monday, December 7. GauchoSpace will close the lecture quizzes at that time and any film comment made on YouTube past that point will be considered late.
Reading and Lecture assignment:
After completing the weeks reading and watching each of the two lecture videos, please go to GauchoSpace and take the short quiz on that lecture, which is located in the weekly section.
Film assignment:
Please comment on YouTube on Ken’s video “Green New Deal.”
Please note, while you can watch this video on this page, you need to go to YouTube to comment in the YouTube comment section.
If YouTube is blocked in your country, Ken’s short talk will also be uploaded to GauchoSpace (GauchoCast) and a forum has been opened under this week on GauchoSpace for you to make your comment there (rather than on YouTube).
Also note that while Ken’s introduction covers both of the above films, you only need to comment on the film that you watched.
