WEEK #5 ASSIGNMENT<\/p>\n

Midterm:<\/p>\n

The midterm will open on GauchoSpace at 6 AM (PST) on Friday, November 6 and close at 6 AM (PST) on Saturday, November 7. Hence, it will be open for a total of 24 hours, during which you may take it at a time of your choosing.<\/p>\n

The midterm will consist of 30 questions that are each worth .5% of the course grade. Consequently, the midterm is worth 15% of the total course grade. The midterm will cover the first five weeks of the course (i.e. the first 10 lectures and the first 5 film assignments). Please see the syllabus for more details.<\/p>\n

Film:<\/p>\n

Please watch\u00a0either<\/em>\u00a0the documentary\u00a0Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things<\/em>\u00a0or the alternative films listed below according to these guidelines:<\/p>\n

1) If you have not seen\u00a0Minimalism<\/em>, please watch it. It is available for viewing on GauchoSpace (GauchoCast). If you are not enrolled in the class, it currently streams from\u00a0Netflix<\/em>, as well as can be rented for a relatively modest fee from YouTube, Amazon, Google, etc.<\/p>\n

2) If you have already seen\u00a0Minimalism<\/em>, please instead watch both of these two short films on Youtube:\u00a0Visualizing a Plenitude Economy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0The High Price of Materialism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3) Since we will be considering each of them in class, feel free to watch all the videos.<\/p>\n

Film assignment<\/em>: after watching the above film(s), please watch Ken\u2019s video on YouTube introducing them<\/a> and comment on his video. Note that while Ken\u2019s introduction covers all of the above films, you only need to comment on the film that you watched. However, if you have already watched Minimalism<\/em>, please feel free to reference it in your comment.<\/p>\n

Weekly Assignment\/Assessment:<\/p>\n

Please note that both the reading and lecture, as well as film, assignments need to be completed by 6 AM on Monday, November 9. <\/em>GauchoSpace will close the lecture quizzes at that time and any film comment made on YouTube past that point will be considered late.<\/p>\n

Reading and Lecture assignment<\/em>:<\/p>\n

After completing the weeks reading and watching each of the two lecture videos, please go to GauchoSpace and take the short quiz on that lecture, which is located in the weekly section.<\/p>\n

Film assignment<\/em>:<\/p>\n

Please comment on YouTube on Ken’s video “Minimalism<\/em><\/a>.”<\/p>\n

Please note, while you can watch this video on this page, you need to go to YouTube to comment in the YouTube comment section.<\/em><\/p>\n

If YouTube is blocked in your country, Ken\u2019s short talk will also be uploaded to GauchoSpace (GauchoCast) and a forum has been opened under this week on GauchoSpace for you to make your comment there (rather than on YouTube).<\/p>\n

Also note that while Ken’s introduction covers both of the above films, you only need to comment on the film that you watched.<\/p>\n
