Please read the Preface<\/a>,\u00a0Introduction<\/a>, and first chapter (\u201cEconomy<\/a>\u201c) of\u00a0Walden,\u00a0<\/em>which\u00a0can all be read on this website.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, although Thoreau is a major proponent of a simple lifestyle in the West, this tradition exists in a range of cultures. Here the Dalai Lama weighs in on the subject:<\/p>\n

“If one\u2019s life is simple, contentment has to come. Simplicity is extremely important for happiness. Having few desires, feeling satisfied with what you have, is very vital; satisfaction with just enough food, clothing, shelter to protect yourself from the elements. And finally, there is an intense delight in abandoning faulty states of mind and in cultivating helpful ones in meditation.”<\/p>\n

Films<\/strong><\/p>\n

Please watch either<\/em>\u00a0the documentary\u00a0Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things<\/em>\u00a0or the alternative films listed below according to these guidelines:<\/p>\n

1) If you have NOT taken Eng 22 (Intro to L & E) in 2019 or 2020, please watch Minimalism<\/em>. It is available for viewing on GauchoSpace (GauchoCast). If you are not enrolled in the class, it currently streams from Netflix<\/em>, as well as can be rented for a relatively modest fee from YouTube, Amazon, Google, etc.<\/p>\n

2) If you have taken taken Eng 22 in 2019 or 2020, please instead watch\u00a0both of these two short films on Youtube:\u00a0Visualizing a Plenitude Economy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0The High Price of Materialism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3) Since we will be considering each of them in class, feel free to watch all the videos.<\/p>\n

Lecture videos<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are three required lectures this week:<\/p>\n

First, please watch this lecture by Ken: \u201cWhy the climate crisis is a cultural problem (and why electric cars are more trouble than good)”<\/a><\/p>\n

Note that you\u00a0are not<\/em> required to post comments to this video, even though there are hundreds of responses to it. These posts are from 2019-20, when responding was a requirement of the course, which it is not in 2020-21.<\/p>\n

Second, please watch\u00a0both<\/em>\u00a0of these \u201cDeep Dive\u201d lectures by Ken:<\/p>\n

Please note that assessments need to be completed by 6 AM on Monday, February\u00a01 <\/em>GauchoSpace will close the lecture quizzes at that time and any film comment made on YouTube past that point will be considered late.<\/p>\n

After doing the Walden<\/em>\u00a0readings, please watch Ken\u2019s video on YouTube introducing Walden<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and comment on his introduction.<\/p>\n
