This week\u2019s reading is Chapters 2-7 of Vance Packard\u2019s classic 1960 study of consumerism:\u00a0The Waste Makers<\/em>. A PDF of the entire book is\u00a0available online<\/a>. (You are only required to read Chapters 2-7.)<\/p>\n

Films<\/strong><\/p>\n

Please watch\u00a0either<\/em>\u00a0the documentary\u00a0The True Cost<\/em>\u00a0or \u201cThe Ugly Truth Of Fast Fashion\u201d (from\u00a0Patriot Act<\/em>\u00a0with Hasan Minhaj) according to these guidelines:<\/p>\n

1) If you have not<\/em> taken Eng 22 (Intro to L & E) in 2019 or 2020, please watch The True Cost<\/em>. It is available for viewing on GauchoSpace (GauchoCast). If you are not enrolled in the class, it can be rented for a relatively modest fee from YouTube, Amazon, Google, etc.<\/p>\n

2) If you have taken taken Eng 22 in 2019 or 2020, please instead watch\u00a0The Ugly Truth Of Fast Fashion on YouTube<\/a>, which streams for free online.<\/p>\n

Lecture videos<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are three required lectures this week:<\/p>\n

First, please watch this lecture by Ken: \u201cFlying, the absolute worst thing that you can do environmentally”<\/a><\/p>\n

Note that you\u00a0are not<\/em> required to post comments to this video, even though there are hundreds of responses to it. These posts are from 2019-20, when responding was a requirement of the course, which it is not in 2020-21.<\/p>\n

Second, please watch\u00a0both<\/em>\u00a0of these \u201cDeep Dive\u201d lectures by Ken:<\/p>\n

1) \u201cMinimalism<\/a>\u201d\u00a0 (The written comments to which Ken is replying can be found here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

2) \u201cWalden<\/em><\/a>\u201d (The written comments to which Ken is replying\u00a0can be found here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Weekly Assessments<\/strong><\/p>\n

Please note that assessments need to be completed by 6 AM on Monday, February\u00a08. <\/em>GauchoSpace will close the lecture quizzes at that time and any film comment made on YouTube past that point will be considered late.<\/p>\n

After completing the week’s reading and watching all three of the above lecture videos (the two short lectures and the two deep dives), please go to GauchoSpace and take the short quiz for this week, which is located in the weekly section.<\/p>\n

After reading The Waste Makers<\/em>\u00a0chapters, please watch\u00a0Ken\u2019s video on YouTube introducing it<\/a> and comment on this introduction.<\/p>\n

If you cannot view the above video on YouTube (for example, if YouTube is blocked in your country):<\/p>\n

1) The two lectures have also been uploaded to GauchoSpace (GauchoCast).<\/p>\n

2) A forum has been opened under this week on GauchoSpace for you to make your comment there (rather than on YouTube).<\/p>\n

Note that while Ken\u2019s introduction covers both of the above films, you only need to comment on the film that you watched.
