Lectures will be shown from 11:00am -12:15pm on Tuesday & Thursday in Campbell Hall. Lectures start promptly at 11:00am and run for the entire period. Attendance will be taken via iClicker.<\/p>\n

Film<\/strong><\/p>\n

Please watch\u00a0either<\/em>\u00a0the documentary\u00a0Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Wasted! The Story of Food Waste!<\/em>\u00a0according to these guidelines:<\/p>\n

1) If you have not seen\u00a0Cowspiracy<\/em>, please watch it. It is available for viewing on GauchoSpace (GauchoCast).\u00a0Please note that filmmaker Kip Andersen gets a few of his facts wrong. Animal products account for about 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions, not over 50%. Nonetheless,\u00a0Cowspiracy<\/em>\u00a0is still a striking, though-provoking film.\u00a0<\/span>If you are not enrolled in the class, it currently streams from\u00a0Netflix<\/em>. A DVD can also be purchased from\u00a0cowspiracy.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trigger warning<\/em>:\u00a0Cowspiracy<\/em> is not, generally speaking, a particularly graphic film, even though it takes up the beef and other meat industries. In fact, other documentaries that deal with the subject (such as the 2011 film Vegucated<\/em>) actually take viewers inside of slaughterhouses. Hence, Cowspiracy<\/em>\u00a0seems to be attempting something of a genre shift. That said, there is one particularly disturbing scene in the film where a duck is slaughtered by a backyard farmer. It occurs from 1:10:16 \u2013 1:12:23. If you think that you might find this scene unsettling, please scrub past it. In general, feel free to skip any scene that seems a little disturbing. None of them will appear on the exam.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) If you have already seen\u00a0Cowspiracy<\/em>, please instead watch\u00a0Wasted!<\/em>. It is up on GauchoCast. If you are not enrolled in the class, it currently can be rented for a relatively modest fee from YouTube, Amazon, Google, etc.<\/p>\n

3) Since we will be considering each in class, feel free to watch both videos. They are each interesting, though in different ways.<\/p>\n

After watching one of the above films, please watch Ken\u2019s video on YouTube introducing them<\/a> and comment on his video. Note that, while you can watch this video on this page, you need to go to YouTube to comment in the YouTube comment section.<\/p>\n

Note too that while Ken\u2019s introduction covers both of the above films, you only need to comment on the film that you watched. However, if you have already watched Cowspiracy<\/em>, please feel free to reference it in your comment.<\/p>\n

Please note that your YouTube comments on Ken’s short lectures on the films need to be completed by 6 AM on Monday, November 13. <\/em><\/p>\n
